Saint Teresa of Calcutta Villa development taking shape downtown

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Saint Teresa of Calcutta Villa is beginning to take shape at the corner of 14th and Commercial Streets in downtown San Diego.
Father Joeâs Villages broke ground on the project in January 2020, and construction crews have started putting up exterior walls and said the project is on schedule. The ribbon-cutting is expected in February 2022.
When completed, the 14-story building will offer more than 400 units and house more than 500 people dealing with homelessness.
âThis is not a shelter,â said Deacon Jim Vargas, CEO, and President of Father Joeâs Villages. âThis is permanent housing, so the individuals that will be residing here. these will be their apartments.â ....

Downtown Apartment Tower Will Provide Housing for Homeless

Construction has reached the halfway point for a $145 million downtown East Village apartment tower with a twist.
Unlike many of its neighbors, the target market for Saint Teresa of Calcutta Villa are some of the same people who may now sleep in the shadows of the steel shell of the rising building – homeless or recently homeless individuals, veterans and families.
Reaching 14 stories at 14th and Commercial streets, Saint Teresa’s will include 407 apartments meant to provide permanent housing for more than 500 people. ....

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria advocated Tuesday for a March 2020 ballot measure that got 65% of the vote to pass after the fact due to an appellate court ruling that established a simple majority as the new threshold for similar ballot items.
Measure C was a citizens initiative placed before voters in March 2020 that sought to increase hotel taxes to fund upgrades to the San Diego Convention Center, to fund projects to combat homelessness and street repairs.
