Rise domestic abuse charity: Contract investigation promised


The legal threat is understood to have come from a Rise service user.
The committee also received a report which said that a cross-party working group should have been set up in 2018 to oversee the commissioning process – but this never happened.
Even if it had been set up, councillors would not have been involved in evaluating the contract bids and, the committee was told, procurement law required councils to select the best tender.
The report said: “Awarding public contracts is tightly regulated to ensure all bidders are treated equally and to ensure the process is non-discriminatory and transparent.
“It is unlawful to design a procurement to artificially narrow competition. ....

Illegal immigrants found in raids as part of slavery investigation
A CONVENIENCE store at the centre of a modern slavery investigation is accused of paying immigrant workers “a pittance” and putting them up in unsafe conditions.
Councillors heard that Sussex Police raided Saltdean News and found a worker with no right to be in the UK on 16 December, after receiving a Home Office crime report.
Officers also found another illegal immigrant at a premises in Portslade owned by the licensees, Krunal Chandrakant Patel and Kirma Krunal Patel.
Sussex Police asked Brighton and Hove City Council to review Saltdean News’ alcohol licence the same month, and notified the Patels. ....

Funding announced for domestic abuse survivors in Brighton

MORE money has been earmarked to support victims of domestic abuse after councillors approved the extra funding during their annual budget.
Members of Brighton and Hove City Council agreed to spend £95,000 in the coming year on support for mothers, children and young people affected by domestic abuse.
The money is to be given out as grant funding to community and voluntary sector organisations, with a recurring £50,000 a year budgeted as well as a one-off £45,000 in 2021-22.
The decision was made weeks after the Brighton charity RISE learnt that it had lost a £5 million seven-year council contract. ....

A NEW Brighton takeaway offering Nando’s style peri-peri chicken has been told that it must close by 11pm and cannot sell alcohol.
KL Direct, the owner of Portos Grill, in Arundel Road, Brighton, applied to Brighton and Hove City Council for a drinks licence and a late-night refreshment licence.
Sussex Police opposed the application to sell beer and peri peri chicken until midnight from the old Fabric Warehouse premises.
Police licensing officer Hannah Staplehurst told a council licensing panel on Thursday 14 January that the force had concerns about anti-social behaviour in the area. ....
