Decolonizing classrooms: Unalalaska teachers discuss Black History Month March 5th |
February is Black History Month, a time when schools, libraries, and organizations across the nation often pause to celebrate Black history and recognize the United States??? violent and unjust treatment of Black people. But in Unalaska, many teachers aren???t doing anything special in their classrooms this month because they are working to include Black history and perspectives in their lesson plans year-round. ???It???s kind of like we???re saying your history isn???t history, and your literature isn???t literature, and your art isn???t art, unless it???s February ?? the shortest month of the year,??? said fifth- and-sixth grade teacher Greta Eustace. ???And that just never seemed right to me.??? ....
Naknek man arrested for alleged assault with hatchet February 18th |
Naknek resident Christopher Gong, 34, faces one count of second degree felony assault after allegedly attacking a woman with a hatchet, according to a news release from the Bristol Bay Borough Police Department. Her injuries were not life-threatening, and she has received medical treatment. The Borough police arrested Gong Feb. 9. Gong also faces two counts of violating conditions of release; he allegedly returned to a residence and contacted the woman while on bail for prior felony assault charges. Gong is currently being held in the Bristol Bay Borough Detention facility with bail set at $5,000. ....
New petition would block public health mandates February 18th |
A campaign to limit Unalaska officials power to require mask-wearing and other public health measures is one step closer to heading to the ballot box. The city issued a pair of petitions last week that seek to amend two sections of the Unalaska Code of Ordinances. The measures would restrict the powers of the City Council, the city manager and the director of emergency preparedness during an epidemic. We feel that the local City Council has consistently issued resolutions that are completely inconsistent with our values and way of life and rights as Americans, said Jeff Manns, a retired Alaska State Trooper and one of the primary sponsors of the petitions. ....
