Stationary grills get try-out in Kenney Park

LIGONIER â Users of Kenney Park will soon be able to cook out for their picnics with the addition of two new stationary charcoal grills near a pavilion. The board of works approved the purchase Wednesday.
The two new grills will be installed on concrete pads and have a container nearby to safely dispose of hot ashes. Each grill costs about $240. Park employees will build the forms for the concrete pads.
Parks director Travis Brimhall said the goal of having the grills is to keep families using the parks, with the added convenience of a charcoal grill for cookouts. He suggested installing the two grills in Kenney Park as a trial. More grills could be added in other locations if the demand is there. ....

Proposed alley project re-imagines appearance, use

LIGONIER â The Ligonier Redevelopment commission got an imagined first look at a design concept for its proposed alley project in the 100 block of Cavin Street.
Rick Johnson of the street department handed out artistâs renderings of some of the features the alley could have. The concept drawings show brightly colored triangular sails for shade and decorative lighting, storefront motifs, benches and a brick surface actually made from stamped concrete.
Johnson said there are original bricks in the alley, covered by asphalt. He said removing the asphalt might loosen or damage the bricks. Stamped concrete could provide an alternative material to create the look of brick. ....

Van Eldon Brimhall passed away suddenly at his home on Friday, February 5, 2021, at the age of 92. “Doc,” as he preferred to be called, was born in Jacksboro, Texas, on November 29, 1928. Upon his passing, he was returned to the town of his birth to lie in rest beside his beloved mother.
Van’s humble beginnings, along with his mother’s encouragement, gave him a drive to succeed and become the best he could be. At age 16, with high school graduation behind him, high hopes, and $50 in his pocket, he hopped a freight train west to California, the land where dreams were made. His cousin Tom Russell and wife Sue provided a caring home so Van could begin college classes. He worked as a commuter bus driver for students, where he met and fell in love with the pretty young Lois Marie Harper. Throughout his young adult years “Miss Sue” continued to be an enthusiastic supporter, both of Van’s education as well as for his choice to marry that pretty lady. This ....
