Simply put, “Up North just means summer vacation time” in Michigan, said reader Chris Jones of Rockford.
“No matter where ‘Up North’ is to you, it’s where you want to be in the summer,” said Jones, a father of two who is the controller at Rockford Package Supply. “It’s where you want to be in the summer..We all love going Up North!”
Exercising caution during wildfire season
The Sault News
Wildfire season is here, which means citizens and residents need to exercise caution when burning and ensure that they have a burn permit.
Rob Shields, Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ forest fire supervisor for the Sault Ste. Marie Management Unit, said springtime is the most critical time frame for wildfires as a result of vegetation being cured from the winter months.
“Each week, Upper Peninsula fire managers from the Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Bureau of Indian Affairs have a conference call to prepare for the upcoming week,” said Shields. “During this call, the weather service provides detailed information on expected weather, as wildfire spread and intensity is heavily dependent on temperature, wind, relative humidity, and precipitation.”

There’s not much to do in Ewen, Michigan. With only a couple of car dealerships, an auto repair place, and a tire shop bunched together along the main drag and a population on a good day of maybe 500, you might miss it completely while tooling along M-28 in Ontonagon County.
The school’s the focal point, of course. Always is in an unincorporated community. And the locals still reminisce about the state basketball titles the newly consolidated Ewen-Trout Creek captured nearly 50 years ago the boys in 1972 and the girls the year after that. In fact, the Panthers are still one of the top teams around. But athletic prowess isn’t why Upper Peninsula folks along and all points north and south of the 7-hour jaunt from Drummond Island to Ironwood now have a beef with Ewen and the McMillan Township populace in general.
