Exercising caution during wildfire season The Sault News Wildfire season is here, which means citizens and residents need to exercise caution when burning and ensure that they have a burn permit.  Rob Shields, Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ forest fire supervisor for the Sault Ste. Marie Management Unit, said springtime is the most critical time frame for wildfires as a result of vegetation being cured from the winter months.  “Each week, Upper Peninsula fire managers from the Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Bureau of Indian Affairs have a conference call to prepare for the upcoming week,” said Shields. “During this call, the weather service provides detailed information on expected weather, as wildfire spread and intensity is heavily dependent on temperature, wind, relative humidity, and precipitation.”
