Can solar radiation management change our climate? Duke, other scientists model high-stakes choices

DURHAM – Rising sea levels, wildfire seasons that are the worst on record, parched cropland in spite of all the evidence that human civilization is losing its game of chicken with the climate, no one is flinching.
Until world leaders can agree to hit the brakes on carbon emissions, humanity needs some safeguards. And the urgency of that need has some scientists seriously considering a climate change amelioration strategy intentionally reducing the sun’s incoming radiation that might have been dismissed as outlandish in less dire times.
“This strategy of solar radiation management, or SRM, isn’t trying to reverse climate change,” said Mark Borsuk, Duke professor of civil and environmental engineering. “It is changing the climate further, but in a way intended to counteract some of the warming effects of greenhouse gases. Responsible scientists are looking at it not as a permanent solution, but as a way to avoid some of the wor ....

Duke bioengineering team is using 3D printing to develop a new instrument for eye imaging

Hafeez Dhalla, who is part of a Duke engineering team developing laser technology to combat diabetic retinopathy, is no stranger to the Duke University’s Harrington Engineering Quadrangle, nor to its reputation for innovation in the health care arena.
Assistant research professor of biomedical engineering at Duke Universit, Dhalla stayed at Duke after graduating as an undergrad to pursue his PhD while helping Joe Izatt, the Michael J. Fitzpatrick Distinguished Professor of Engineering, develop a surgical microscope with built-in optical coherence tomography (OCT) capabilities.
After several years working in industry, he returned to campus on a new mission leverage Duke’s capabilities and resources to develop low-cost scanning laser ophthalmoscopes (SLOs) to combat diabetic retinopathy, which is a major cause of adult blindness. ....
