A year after George Floyd s death, Pennsylvanians are still fighting for change
As Chad Dion Lassiter reflects on the civil rights movement during the last year, he thinks of two moments in recent history that shaped where we are today.
On Aug. 26, 2016, former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sat during the playing of the national anthem before the team s third preseason game. The following week, he kneeled.
His silent protest against racial injustice set off a nationwide debate that included former President Donald Trump calling on NFL owners to fire players who kneeled during the anthem.
On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was killed outside of a grocery store by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who kneeled on Floyd s neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds.

Central Pa. reacts to verdict at trial over George Floyd s death
Tina Nixon is the senior vice president, mission effectiveness, and chief diversity officer at PinnacleHealth Hospitals. Her reaction to the verdict:“Our work continues … we must address racism at all levels in all industries. This is a movement not a moment. The spotlight is on us to make changes.”
U.S. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland s statement following the verdict: The jury in the state trial of Derek Chauvin has fulfilled its civic duty and rendered a verdict convicting him on all counts. While the state’s prosecution was successful, I know that nothing can fill the void that the loved ones of George Floyd have felt since his death. The Justice Department has previously announced a federal civil rights investigation into the death of George Floyd. This investigation is ongoing.

A quiet evening in Philadelphia after guilty verdicts
In Philadelphia, the area around City Hall which for days last June pulsed with protestors following Floyd’s killing resembled a normal Tuesday late afternoon following the verdict announcement.
People took photos near colorful flowers in Dilworth Park, where instead of a protestor screaming into a megaphone, a woman yelled out instructions to a socially-distanced exercise class.
But a sign of abnormality came just after 6 p.m., when eight National Guard vehicles pulled up alongside a municipal building carrying armed guards and supplies.
