Sometimes, at night, a sound comes across my granddaughterâs backyard, like the cry of a long-extinct animal. The low bellow of the train horn crosses the divide between present and past, and my granddaughter looks up at me, questioning: âWhat was that?â âThe train is going through the North End, by Main Street.â âTrain? Like Thomas?â âNo, a real working train, a freight train.â âWhere are the station and the roundhouse?â âNot here anymore.â Manchester, like most towns rooted in the 1800s industry, had a train station or depot. In fact, Manchester had more than one. Most people remember the North End station in what was called Depot Square. To support these programs’ ongoing efforts, PacifiCorp Foundation, a nonprofit arm for Rocky Mountain Power, is donating more than $200,000 in new funding across the six states it serves to support the arts and humanities – along with continued needs by organizations on the frontlines of the COVID-19 response. ....
A St. Johnsbury group is working on a plan to re-develop a Depot Square building into a bike, food and arts mecca. St. Johnsbury Town Manger Chad Whitehead announced Monday the town is sending a letter of intent to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that it plans to apply for a Rural Business Enterprise Grant to support the purchase and re-development of the former âWine Gateâ restaurant building at 25 Depot Square. The town would act as the fiscal agent for the public-private project being developed by the St. Johnsbury-based âTrailhead Collectiveâ group. âIt could create up to eight different businesses,â said Whitehead as he briefed the select board Monday about the project. âIt would be bike rentals, there are some not-for-profits associated with it, there are several different micro-food ventures. The concept is to get this up and running to coincide with the Governorâs plans for finishing the Lamoille Valley Rail Tra ....
