YOUR MANCHESTER: Trains woven into fabric of town's history | Living

Sometimes, at night, a sound comes across my granddaughter’s backyard, like the cry of a long-extinct animal. The low bellow of the train horn crosses the divide between present and past, and my granddaughter looks up at me, questioning: “What was that?”
“The train is going through the North End, by Main Street.”
“Train? Like Thomas?”
“No, a real working train, a freight train.”
“Where are the station and the roundhouse?”
“Not here anymore.”
Manchester, like most towns rooted in the 1800s industry, had a train station or depot. In fact, Manchester had more than one.
Most people remember the North End station in what was called Depot Square. The station, near where Farrs stands today, created a town center from the time the Hartford, Fishkill, and Providence Railroad came to town in the 1840s. Stores, a hotel and restaurants and bars filled the multi-leveled buildings constructed around the ....

Two dozen non-profits in Wyoming, including five in Casper, received thousands of dollars in grants from the PacifiCorp Foundation to strengthen arts and other programs in communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a news release.
Arts and educational organizations have had to find creative ways to present their programs including using virtual programs to connect to families and students, the news release said.
“Local programs like these are the heartbeat of Wyoming, providing connection, education and tradition and helping to heal and strengthen our communities,” said Sharon Fain, Rocky Mountain Power vice president for Wyoming. ....

Rocky Mountain Power Provides New Grants to Wyoming Organizations

CASPER As winter settles into communities throughout Wyoming, ending a year that has brought challenges like no other, it’s the arts and humanities programs that continue to provide needed connection and healing.
Local organizations that deliver art, music, theater, learning resources and connection to local history and place have had to pivot during 2020 in ways never imagined. Many have moved to virtual programming to connect with families and students at home while also working behind-the-scenes to preserve cherished in-person programs so that they can return in the future.
To support these programs’ ongoing efforts, PacifiCorp Foundation, a nonprofit arm for Rocky Mountain Power, is donating more than $200,000 in new funding across the six states it serves to support the arts and humanities – along with continued needs by organizations on the frontlines of the COVID-19 response. ....

The Keith Block in Depot Square, East Brookfield, built by William Keith in 1887 and home for many years to town offices.

Multi-Business Bike Center Proposed For Depot Square Building

A St. Johnsbury group is working on a plan to re-develop a Depot Square building into a bike, food and arts mecca.
St. Johnsbury Town Manger Chad Whitehead announced Monday the town is sending a letter of intent to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that it plans to apply for a Rural Business Enterprise Grant to support the purchase and re-development of the former “Wine Gate” restaurant building at 25 Depot Square.
The town would act as the fiscal agent for the public-private project being developed by the St. Johnsbury-based “Trailhead Collective” group.
“It could create up to eight different businesses,” said Whitehead as he briefed the select board Monday about the project. “It would be bike rentals, there are some not-for-profits associated with it, there are several different micro-food ventures. The concept is to get this up and running to coincide with the Governor’s plans for finishing the Lamoille Valley Rail Tra ....
