Following the fire last Friday, 13 asylum seekers have been transferred out of Napier barracks to Tinsley House immigration removal centre. It is understood they are accused of taking part in a protest at the barracks, also last Friday, and are on criminal bail. The government told the court that transfers away from the barracks were not possible while it was in lockdown due to the Covid outbreak, but the court agreed with the asylum seeker that exceptions can be made to Covid regulations to avoid further harm to the asylum seekers at the barracks and that the transfer needed to take place within hours. ....
Brook House inquiry: Witnesses could be protected from prosecution PA 14 December 2020, 1:37 pm Witnesses who give evidence at a public inquiry into allegations of abuse at a scandal-hit detention centre could be granted immunity from prosecution. The Attorney General and the Home Secretary have been asked to consider protection against self-incrimination for those who speak out during the proceedings, a preliminary hearing of the Brook House inquiry was told on Monday. Counsel for the inquiry, Cathryn McGahey QC, said: “In order to avoid the risk of witnesses declining to answer for fear of self-incrimination, the chair has requested undertakings from both the Attorney General and the Home Secretary”, adding: “The inquiry is awaiting the Attorney and Home Secretary’s decisions.” ....
