Online Safety Bill labelled 'state-backed censorship' by campaigners | Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard


Campaigners have labelled the Online Safety Bill “flawed” and “disastrous” for privacy and free speech following the draft publication of the new internet safety rules.
The Bill will require firms to abide by a duty of care to their users, with regulator Ofcom able to levy large fines and even block access to sites that do not comply.
The largest platforms will also be expected to clamp down on content that is considered “legal but harmful”, including posts linked to topics such as self-harm or those that contain disinformation.
But campaign groups have suggested that this approach is too vague and could lead to free speech being eroded. ....

New internet laws will be published today in the draft Online Safety Bill to protect children online and tackle some of the worst abuses on social media, including racist hate crimes.
Ministers have added landmark new measures to the Bill to safeguard freedom of expression and democracy, ensuring necessary online protections do not lead to unnecessary censorship.
The draft Bill marks a milestone in the Government’s fight to make the internet safe. Despite the fact that we are now using the internet more than ever, over three quarters of UK adults are concerned about going online, and fewer parents feel the benefits outweigh the risks of their children being online – falling from 65 per cent in 2015 to 50 per cent in 2019. ....

PIMFA Launches Fraud Prevention Guide As Part Of Campaign To Protect Consumers From Online Fraud

PIMFA, the trade association for wealth management, investment services and the investment and financial advice industry, has launched a guide to online fraud prevention for member firms as part of its campaign to make the internet safer for consumers.
The guide for firms provides information on the most common examples of fraud that PIMFA has identified in the past few years, including impersonation fraud, retail bond fraud, social media fraud and cloned websites. It also provides examples of real-life situations in which a firm or its clients were the victims of fraud, as well as advice on best practice to help prevent fraudsters from gaining access to clients. ....
