ON SATURDAY 20 March, Jack Kennedy was back in action at Thurles racecourse.
It was less than 24 hours since the biggest win of his career, a landmark moment in becoming the youngest jockey in modern times to claim the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
In racing, it is one of the quirks of the trade to operate under the intense glare of the sporting spotlight and then resume riding in an off-Broadway setting the following day.
Dingle lost a rare old character with the death last Wednesday of Timmy Kelliher from Milltown, who was known by everybody and brought a smile wherever he went.
Timmy was a particularly sociable man who would chat away for hours with anybody who cared to join him, preferably at the counter in Curran s or maybe McCarthy s or Foxy John s. He had a great interest in people, regardless of their age, who they were, or where they came from. He saw all people as equal, but he didn t have much time for people who had notions about themselves, and this is how he came to have a memorable part in the lore surrounding Ryan s Daughter .
New Dublin Bay Commodore Ann Kirwan Brings Many Talents to DBSC

This week, Ann Kirwan of the National Yacht Club became the 25th Commodore of Dublin Bay Sailing Club at the club s 136th Annual General Meeting, in succession to Jonathan Nicholson of the Royal St George YC. This harmonious change of the watch comes at the conclusion of a truncated season in which, despite the adverse effects of the pandemic, DBSC managed to put through a very complete yet still fully COVID-compliant AIB-sponsored racing programme.
In order to understand how this was possible, we need to look at the origins of the club, and how it comes to be in the unique position it fills today. For if there s another sailing body in the world which can be reasonably ranked with Dublin Bay Sailing Club, then we d be interested to hear about it for purposes of comparison.
