Shelby s Special Blendz Cafe caters to individuals with disabilities Special Blendz Café is Shelby’s newest eatery, serving acai bowls, sandwiches and ice cream, but the restaurant has a dual purpose. The café, which opened March 13 at 1230 East Dixon Boulevard, is run primarily by people with special needs. Restaurant owner Alan Routhier said often times they go unnoticed and feel shunned from the world. His mission is to ensure each employee has a sense of belonging and purpose. “I believe everyone has a passion and that is 100% my passion,” said Routhier. Routhier said he gravitated toward people with special needs while in middle school. It was an inborn instinct to be part of that community, and he would often volunteer to be of service to them. ....
Zaxby’s will open a new restaurant at 2007 East Dixon Boulevard, adjacent to its existing restaurant at 2005 East Dixon Boulevard in Shelby, North Carolina. The redesigned Zaxby’s will replace the current location effective Monday, Jan. 25. This Zaxby’s location is scheduled to open its dining room at 50% capacity in addition to offering drive-thru. “Our team is thrilled to offer the Shelby community a seamless transition to our brand new restaurant,” said seasoned licensee and former Zax Council President Neil Glezen. “We will close our existing location at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 24 to have time to move to the new location. We’re still considering several options for future use of the old building.” ....
