The winner of next yearâs Republican primary for governor could be determined by whether former U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta or state Sen. Doug Mastriano holds the Trump card.
Both are favorites of Donald Trump, and both would have video and audio of events of themselves with the former president for potential TV or radio ads.
The key though, political insiders say, is if Trump actually makes an endorsement in the 2022 race.
âTrump still carries weightâ in Pennsylvania politics, said Dick Stewart, a Lemoyne lawyer who co-chairs the Central Pennsylvania Caucus of The Republican State Committee.
It is, however, way too early to call the GOP primary a two-person race. Thereâs a handful of likely and declared candidates. A few others are testing the waters. At least 10 others are being mentioned by political insiders.

(AP) The husband of a Pennsylvania appellate judge who is running for the state’s highest court began serving a prison sentence Tuesday in a long-running case involving taking money from an elderly woman’s trust fund to benefit several political campaigns and a charity connected to his wife.
Charles McCullough’s incarceration comes as voters decide whether to back his wife, Commonwealth Judge Patricia McCullough, in her bid for an open seat on Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court.
Patricia McCullough is seeking the Republican nomination in May 18′s primary election against two fellow Republican judges, Commonwealth Court Judge Kevin Brobson and Philadelphia Common Pleas Court Judge Paula Patrick.
