Brewster School Committee race grows tense

In a typical school committee election, Heather Sprague might put out a lawn sign supporting her candidate, but in terms of advocacy, that’s as involved as she would get. Ahead of Tuesday s election, though, the Brewster mom has been reaching out privately to talk to friends about one candidate she thinks is taking pains to avoid talking to voters about her beliefs. That candidate is Rheanna Hastings, who is running against Sarah Sherman for the town’s only contested school committee seat. Sprague, who identified herself as a Democrat, says Hastings has tried to obscure her connections with right-wing political groups and her motives for running.

Partisan politics leaks down to local Cape Cod races, fuels interest

BOSTON As towns on the Cape gear up for a spring of municipal elections, with seats on the ballot ranging from school committee to town moderator, several local political activists say some of these races while nonpartisan on paper have become framed in part by national politics. Organizers on both sides of the political spectrum agreed the region’s politics can be divisive, though they disagreed on who was responsible. Still, this new focus on local contests could help bolster civic engagement, they said, regardless of which candidates ultimately get elected. “I do think it’s coming right down to this level now,” Paula Miller, a Brewster resident and member of United Cape Patriots, said of the partisanship. “I think the intensity is really being brought to bear.”

On May 25 I will enthusiastically vote for Bill Henchy for Brewster Planning Board. I’ve had the honor of meeting Bill and understanding his deep commitment to the town’s people and character. I bought my home nearly 19 years ago. I chose Brewster for its enchanting country feel and “Olde Cape charm.” At the time I was a civil engineer pursuing a degree in interior design. Thankfully at that young adult age I had the experience to recognize the unique qualities Brewster offered without the additional distance from the bridges. I understood that I could easily change my house but not my location once the investment was made.
