Mad Dog, Catfish and Bear: An all-animal lineup of Giants and A s in honor of #RallyRabbit

Skip to main content Mad Dog, Catfish and Bear: An all-animal lineup of Giants and A s in honor of #RallyRabbit FacebookTwitterEmail Giants Pablo Sandoval stands in the on deck circle during Game 3 of the NLDS at AT&T Park on Monday, Oct. 6, 2014 in San Francisco, Calif.Carlos Avila Gonzalez / The Chronicle First of all, apologies up front. We’re taking a little break from our regularly scheduled program to share some silliness a month into the season. With #RallyRabbit all the rage at Oracle Park Alex the therapy bunny made another appearance Wednesday, this time in the bleachers we figured we’d go hog wild, have a whale of a time and let the cat out of the bag with an animal-driven roster of Giants and A’s. So holy cow, let’s take the bull by the horns and start this wild goose chase:

Top 60 All-Time Jays: #5 Tony Fernandez

Top 60 All-Time Jays: #5 Tony Fernandez Share this story Tony Fernandez (born Octavio Antonio Fernandez Castro) was born June 30th, 1962, in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. He was signed as an amateur free agent by the Jays in 1979. The Jays, back then, scouted the Dominican pretty thoroughly; we signed several players from there. The Jays called Tony up when the rosters expanded in September 1983 and got into a handful of games. He was called up to the Jays for good at the end of May 1984, at first splitting time with veteran Alfredo Griffin and slowly taking over the position as the season went on. He also played some third base. A switch hitter, he had a pretty decent rookie season, hitting .270/.317/.356 in 88 games.

Happy Birthday Alex Gonzalez and Pete Walker

Happy Birthday Alex Gonzalez and Pete Walker Share this story We’ve had two shortstops named Alex Gonzalez; this is the first. This Alex was a member of the Blue Jays from 1994 to 2001. The Jays drafted Gonzalez in the 14th round of the 1991 amateur draft. He had the best career of any player taken in that round of that draft. He rose quickly thru the Jays minor league system and started the 1994 season as the Jay’s starting SS at the age of 21, but after 15 games, he had a .151 batting average, and the Jays gave the job to Dick Schofield. It would have been good if the team had a bit more patience with him; Schofield was nearing the end of an ok career, but, by then, he wasn’t a guy you’d want to play short for you.
