Unofficial results in for Special District Director Election


VALE — The first round of unofficial results for the 2021 Special District Director Election are in, with ballot boxes having closed at 8 p.m. Results, including voter percentage turnouts, remain unofficial until they are finalized by Malheur County Clerk Gayle Trotter on June 2. 
“Majority will be complete by the time we go home tonight though,” she wrote in an email to the newspaper on Tuesday afternoon. 
At 2:30 p.m., Trotter said 31% of ballots — 5,196 of the 17,053 registered voters had returned their ballots, and an update was not available this evening.
Noteworthy highlights are that Malheur County Commissioners will have to meet three times per year to discuss “promoting Malheur County’s interest in moving the Oregon-Idaho border.” Preliminary results show 1,824 yes votes compared to 1,627 no votes.  ....

Leader to get $30k more per year


The Treasure Valley Community College Board of Education on Thursday extended President Dana Young’s current contract through June of 2026, while increasing Young’s compensation package by $30,000.
After discussion in executive session, the board went into open session and voted 4-to-2 in support of the compensation increase.
Board Chairwoman Cheryl Cruson, vice chairman Stephen Crow board members Darlene McConnell and Betty Carter, voted for the increase. Board members Mark Wettstein and Rodger Findley voted no. Board member John Hall was absent. 
Young’s current salary is $152,763, which is the lowest base salary among community college presidents in Oregon, said Abby Lee, college spokeswoman, in an email. The college president receives additional compensation, including $8,400 in an annuity, $4,800 in an annual car allowance, $1,200 in phone allowance, and $9,166 in PERS contributions, Lee said. Young also receives 25 days of vacation,  ....

Vikings get back to class; Vale School District Board of Directors OKs return to in-person instruction

The Vale School District Board of Directors unanimously approved a measure to return to in-person instruction for schools in Vale on Wednesday night at a special public meeting. The targeted start date for reopening is Jan. 19.
The schools in Vale, like other public schools in Oregon, have had to close their doors for full-time in-person learning due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the related state mandates from Oregon Gov. Kate Brown.
The meeting, which took place in the gymnasium of Vale Middle School, drew out members of the community to hear more about the plan to reopen schools for in-person instruction. ....
