Why the NJ restaurant labor shortage will impact you

The week of Cinco de Mayo should have been a great one for chef Mike Smith. With two popular Mexican restaurants  The Tortilla Press in Collingswood and Tortilla Press Cantina in Pennsauken Smith typically would be filling lots of catering, takeout and delivery orders as well as serving happy diners celebrating the annual holiday. Instead, Smith shut down his catering. He has yet to open his Collingswood location for lunch. He has closed his restaurants on Monday, a first for him. And as for the tent that he has installed to accommodate outdoor diners at his Pennsauken restaurant? I m not able to use it, he said.

The McNay Art Museum’s Print Fair has long been a great way for locals to get their hands on unique works of art. For its 25th anniversary, the free fair has converted to a fully virtual experience this year. This ain’t just some lazy online storefront, though the McNay has collaborated with print dealers nationwide to curate a cornucopia of artworks for sale, all branching from a central hub on the museum’s website that acts as a roadmap for shoppers to navigate the thousands of prints, photos, drawings and watercolors available for purchase.

Access is free and open to the public. “We’ve pivoted to a virtual Print Fair experience out of an abundance of caution and care for our patrons, staff, and dealers from around the country,” said Lyle W. Williams, McNay Curator of Prints and Drawings, Curator of Modern Art. “This year’s event may be the biggest one yet because we really are opening the experience up to the world, while still bringing those conversations with dealers and artists to attendees through a video format.”

CAMDEN – For Rutgers University–Camden theater students, the show must go on. The university’s Department of Visual, Media and Performing Arts will present virtual performances of “She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms,” by Qui Nguyen, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 11 to 13. The play offers a comic adventure into an imaginary realm of demon queens and lords of the underworld. Agnes, an average cheerleader, is thrown into the world of cosplay and Dungeons and Dragons as she searches for her lost sister. This version of the play, specifically adapted for virtual performance, is full of visual inventiveness and dazzling swordplay. It is a funny and moving play about acceptance and understanding, friendship and heartbreak, and having the power to fight those very real monsters that hold us back from being fully human.
