In historic day, Charlottesville removes Lee, Jackson and Lewis-Clark-Sacagawea statues

CHARLOTTESVILLE â The statues of Confederate Gens. Robert E. Lee and Thomas âStonewallâ Jackson, as well as a one of Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and Shoshone interpreter Sacagawea, all were removed within a span of eight hours Saturday â capping a years-long effort by many to rid the city of the monuments.
Erected over the course of five years, the three statues, all commissioned by Paul Goodloe McIntire and gifted to the city, stood for a century. Now, only their pedestals remain.
The historic moment was subdued and peaceful, with dozens gathering on a warm, clear Saturday morning to watch the removals at Market Street and Court Square parks. Crews needed less than two hours to unscrew, remove and load each statue on a flatbed trailer. ....

Albemarle County cuts ribbon on new mobile field office

CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – In what County Executive Jeff Richardson said was the first county celebration since January 31, 2020, he and four members of the Board of Supervisors cut the ribbon at Darden Towe Park on a mobile field office. It’s a white-and-gold Ford Transit van upfit to enable service delivery and community engagement. He said it was 14 months ago when they unveiled programs at the Yancey Community Center.
Board Chair Ned Galloway said the idea for this van was born from the county effort during COVID to distribute cloth coverings at various places last year. He said this van can store and deliver materials to anywhere in the community, and be a county presence that looks good. The van has conversation bubbles on its side on which community members when they see it can write sayings with dry erase markers provided by whomever is manning the van. Galloway said the van is funded from federal COVID dollars that came to the county. ....

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Charlottesville Parks and Recreation Department is returning a program to help you get some fresh air and stay active.
The free bike rental program is returning starting Thursday, April 8.
Bicycles and helmets will be available for free use at Darden-Towe Park every Thursday through May 27.
“You can exchange your keys or your ID when you check out a rental and you’ll get a helmet. You’ll get fitted for a bike, and you’ll sign a participation waiver and then you’ll be on your way to ride along the river,” Kate Purnell, with Parks & Rec, said. ....
