Warren McGraw, a West Virginia political power in two branches of government, is retiring from the bench. Warren McGraw McGraw, most recently a circuit judge in Wyoming County, has submitted his resignation letter to Gov. Jim Justice, according to Beckley’s Register-Herald newspaper. The Governor’s Office earlier today said the letter had not yet been received. “It is with great regret and sadness that … I just retire as circuit judge of the 27th Judicial Circuit,” McGraw wrote. The Register-Herald reported McGraw has been coping with the effects of Parkinson’s Disease, a progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement. ....

Eric Eyre, an investigative reporter at Mountain State Spotlight, dug into how so many powerful narcotics got into his state and found a web of drug distributors, companies that call themselves the “central nervous system” of health care Cardinal Health, McKesson, AmerisourceBergen. They’re huge, ranking in the top 20 of the Fortune 500, and now West Virginia’s Cabell County, one of those hardest hit by opioid addiction, is taking them to court. Mar 9, 2021 Last week, members of West Virginia’s Board of Public Works elected constitutional officers who are part of the executive branch threw their support behind an effort to limit their power. It was an important statement made by people who watched for decades as others in those same positions set up kingdoms for themselves. They remained in place while governors and legislators came and went. Officials such as the state treasurer, state auditor, secretary of state, agriculture commissioner and state attorney general are elected in West Virginia, but do not have term limits. That means once they built enough name recognition and influence, they could remain in power as long as they could wield their influence as incumbents. Mountain State residents will recall former Democrat attorney general Darrell McGraw’s five-term reign, or former Democrat agriculture commissioner Gus Douglass, who held court for an astounding 11 terms. ....
