State employees petition proposed changes to pension

Despite the decision from the state legislature to re-work state employee pensions until the summer, educators and other state employees still gathered outside of the statehouse this weekend to fight for their pensions. When asked about the proposal, Elementary School Educator Tommy Young said, “It changes what I plan to do in the future, and how I plan to continue a success forward. It felt like a punch in the gut.” Young has worked with educators across the country, and says that up until a week ago, he felt proud to say that he was a teacher in Vermont. “Vermont always seemed to be the example compared to all the other states, compared to teachers I talk to, about how teachers are viewed and respected.”Lost respect is a common feeling amongst these rallies. “Teaching in public schools is the hardest job I’ve ever had,” said Mairead Harris from Stowe Middle and High School. “It’s hard because its demanding of your mind and your heart. My name is Tommy Young and I am a 24-year teacher with 22 of those years being here in Vermont. I m a first- and second-grade teacher at Waitsfield Elementary School. Below is my testimony to the House Committee that is proposing a devastating change to a promise we were given as teachers.
