The moratorium might be lifted after a public hearing scheduled for April 13. Commissioners thought the moratorium necessary âto allow Larimer County reasonable time to revise their oil and gas regulations, for the safety, health and welfare of residents in Larimer County,â according to a news release. Lesli Ellis, Community Development Director, said âwe havenât had any applications in the past year or so, so thereâs no current or pending applications affected by the moratorium.â The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission website shows nine drilling permit applications were filed Feb. 17 by Magpie Operating Inc., but Larimer county officials said via email âthey are for drilling wells on an approved PAD site (Bunker 8). These are permits that the moratorium will not affect.â That site is near Loveland. ....
The True Face of the North Face On 3/16/21 at 6:03 PM EDT It started with a nice gesture. Adam Anderson, the CEO of Innovex Downhole Solutions, wanted to buy his employees a Christmas gift. So he ordered 400 North Face jackets and asked that their corporate logo be included. Then came the bad news. The North Face company would sell Innovex the jackets but wouldn t include the energy company s logo. The reason? Innovex was an oil and gas company, and it would be a bad thing for North Face s public image to associate itself with the industry. Not happy with that answer, Anderson struck back with some public relations of his own. It turns out the vast majority of North Face s apparel its hoodies, snow pants, coats and many other items in its product line, like backpacks and tents are made with polyester, polyurethane and nylon, all of which come from petroleum. Even its fancy fleece jackets are made of polyester. ....
Reported oil and gas spills declined considerably last year in Colorado, state data shows. Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission data indicates companies reported 476 spills last year, down from 639 in 2019. The group Center for Western Priorities says that 349 of last yearâs spills involved new releases, as opposed to companies reporting what are referred to as historic spills that occurred earlier but they only discovered last year. It says that of the 349 new spills, the company responsible for the most â13.2%â was Caerus Oil and Gas, which operates locally in the Piceance Basin. The COGCC database indicates that spills reported in 2020 included 258 in Weld County, which last year led the state in drilling activity, and has more than 19,000 active wells. Sixty-three were reported in Garfield County, which ranked third among counties in drilling activity last year and has 11,922 active wells. ....

As the state tries to reform its relationship to drilling, an expensive task awaits. Image credit: Helen H. Richardson/The Denver Post via Getty Images March 11, 2021 From the print edition When an oil or gas well reaches the end of its lifespan, it must be plugged. If it isn’t, the well might leak toxic chemicals into groundwater and spew methane, carbon dioxide and other pollutants into the atmosphere for years on end. But plugging a well is no simple task: Cement must be pumped down into it to block the opening, and the tubes connecting it to tanks or pipelines must be removed, along with all the other onsite equipment. Then the top of the well has to be chopped off near the surface and plugged again, and the area around the rig must be cleaned up. ....
