CSotD: Donkeys, elephants, dogs and horses The Daily Cartoonist

There are some good cartoons on the impending impeachment trial, and we’ll start with
Dan Wasserman (Tribune) because he sets the scene: It’s going to require at least 17 Republicans to vote guilty in order to convict.
Watergate was different in that the actions being investigated were contained within the Executive and there was little Congressional involvement. We’ll never know how an impeachment trial would have come out, but
This time around, as Wasserman suggests, more Republican Senators would have to admit their own complicity, not so much in the call to riot (though a few would), as in creating the atmosphere of alienation in which a patently false accusation of a stolen election could rile up people. ....

As time passes, it looks less likely that Democrats in Congress have the votes to impeach former President Donald Trump for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Senate Republicans failed to derail the impeachment trial, but had enough votes to cast doubt on whether enough GOP senators would vote to convict. Editorial cartoonist Dana Summers depicted the Democrats’ chance of success as a set of extremely narrow goal posts.
Other cartoonists remarked on the wish of Republicans in Congress to “move on” from the controversy. Mike Luckovich drew a crew of whitewashers, while David Horsey saw the GOP as the party that started the fire it now wishes the Democrats would not fuel by impeaching Trump. ....

President Joseph R. Biden Jr. was inaugurated Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021, under unprecedented security and coronavirus precautions. The ceremony came two weeks to the day a mob of Trump supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol. Editorial cartoonists marked the transfer of power with a champagne toast, a turning of the page, tears of joy and expressions of relief by the Founders, the Statue of Liberty and Uncle Sam.
Meanwhile, the 70 million people who voted for former President Donald Trump were shown on the outside looking in to the party inside “Lunch Pail Joe’s Unity Cafe.” A.F. Branco drew Trump leaving the swamp, vowing “we shall return” in a visual echo of Gen. Douglas MacArthur. ....

Remember President Donald Trump’s controversial phone call to the Georgia secretary of state? Or the historic Georgia runoff that delivered the U.S. Senate to the Democrats? Old news, after pro-Trump rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday to disrupt the certification of Electoral College votes for Joe Biden as president.
They did not succeed. But the insurrection left five people dead, including a Capitol police officer, the historic building vandalized, Trump’s presidency in flames and a nation deeply shaken.
Trump, who earlier had egged on his supporters at a rally in front of the White House, faced the possibility he would be impeached for a second time by the House of Representatives. Cabinet members and senior White House officials quit in protest of the president’s actions. By week’s end, Trump announced he would agree ....
