Executive recruitment: From Bad News Bears to the big leagues

Executive recruitment: From Bad News Bears to the big leagues

I love underdogs in sports. Loveable losers. Longshots. When actual victories aren’t at hand, underdogs represent the best qualities personality, spirit, and gumption. While there are many soul-lifting moments in sports underdog history, allow me to share some of my old school favorites:
1974 Muhammad Ali vs. George Foreman aka Rumble in the Jungle – My dad loved boxing so I watched a lot of boxing growing up. Whenever things didn’t go my way, he would say, “Lizzy just rope a dope it,” a strategy made famous by Ali during this match. Which is to say, lean back, take the punches, and tire out your opponent. The bout ended with Ali knocking out the overwhelming favorite, undefeated world heavyweight champion Foreman, also of indoor grill fame. The sport never took with me, but watching the fight reminds me of my dad, and the drama of Rumble in the Jungle is entertaining. Watch it on YouTube ....

Bill to create state bank takes first step

LAS CRUCES - A years-long effort to establish a public bank in New Mexico took its first step forward Thursday, Feb. 18, on a 5-4 vote in the House Commerce and Economic Development Committee.
In past years, legislators had been unwilling to even study the issue, given the fierce opposition from community bankers from throughout the state. That opposition remains, and was bolstered by the fiscal-impact report on the bill, in which state officials from several agencies raised questions about it.
House Bill 236 would appropriate $100 million to start the Public Bank of New Mexico, and create a new 11-person board that would provide oversight and hire the CEO to manage the bank. Supporters said it would keep more of our money in the state and would make more funds available for lending. ....

NM public bank proposal gains momentum

 (Eddie Moore/Albuquerque Journal)
Given New Mexico’s struggles attracting and retaining investment dollars, legislators are considering an unorthodox solution: establishing a statewide public bank.
A local nonprofit, Alliance for Local Economic Prosperity, has developed a business plan that outlines the structure and approach for a state public bank, an entity the state could use to deposit assets and support state investment programs.
While legislation has not yet been introduced, several legislators, including Rep. Patricia Roybal Caballero, D-Albuquerque, and Sen. Jeff Steinborn, D-Las Cruces, have expressed support for the proposal.

“It’s just an idea that just seems to fundamentally make sense to people, and people are excited for it,” Steinborn told the Journal. ....
