Astronomers discover first evidence of tectonic plates on an exoplanet

Researchers at the Tobias Meier Center for Space and Habitability (CSH) at the University of Bern, Switzerland, believe they have found the first evidence of tectonic plate activity on an exoplanet.
Discovered in 2019, LHS 3844b it is 45 light years from us and is a mostly rocky planet, slightly larger than Earth. Scientists believe that it does not have an atmosphere, which makes it easier to observe its surface.

Its orbit is so close to its star that it has synchronized rotation, that is, always shows the same side to her. With this, half of the planet is in an eternal day , with a surface temperature that can exceed 800 ºC, and the other half in an eternal night, with a temperature of -250 ºC. ....

You may not be all that familiar with planet LHS 3844b, but it now has its own particular distinction: It s the first planet outside of our Solar System where astronomers think they might have evidence of tectonic activity.

That evidence is a set of advanced simulations based on observations of the rocky planet, which is slightly larger than Earth. Importantly for this particular piece of research, it doesn t look as though the exoplanet has an atmosphere.
That leaves half of LHS 3844b permanently exposed to its sun and could mean temperatures of up to roughly 800 degrees Celsius (1,472 degrees Fahrenheit) on the daytime side, and about minus 250 degrees Celsius (minus 418 degrees Fahrenheit) on the night-time side. ....
