Dan Kastner, MD, PhD
A research pioneer in rare genetic diseases was one of the recipients of the prestigious AMA Award for Government Service. Dan Kastner, MD, PhD, devoted his more than three-decade career to diagnosing and treating rare genetic diseases characterized by fever and inflammation that often result in disabling conditions and death. His work has provided detailed molecular explanations for these illnesses.
Dr. Kastner directs the National Human Genome Research Institute’s division of intramural research and heads the inflammatory disease section. He has seen his work become the conceptual basis for effective targeted therapies. It has informed medicine’s understanding of more common illnesses as well. ....

Nod to Solar - SNJ Today

Nod to Solar
Millville, all of Cumberland County hope to bask in benefits of locating solar field along Nabb Avenue.
by Ahmad Graves-El and Deborah A. Ein
Much like a field of sunflowers following the sun across the sky each day, solar panels on a solar field planned for Nabb Avenue in western Millville will similarly capture the sun’s rays. The Millville Planning Board unanimously approved a 50-megawatt solar energy farm at its January 12 meeting, with construction expected to commence this fall, and operation planned for a year later.
Dakota Power Partners, with offices in Millville and in Denver, Colorado, is investing an estimated $70 million in the project, called Nabb Solar I. The solar energy farm, to be located on 379 acres along Nabb Avenue, is predicted to bring hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars into Cumberland County. ....

It s an ancient disease that may have evolved to confer protection against the plague but until 20 years ago, it had scientists and doctors flummoxed.
They couldn t explain why those afflicted, often in the same family, had recurring fevers, abdominal pain, troublesome rashes and muscle aches. Known as familial Mediterranean fever, the disease often went undiagnosed for years, and it was sometimes fatal.
Unusual in most parts of the world, it was more common in the countries that border the Eastern Mediterranean including Turkey and Israel where one or two of every 1,000 people have it. ....

New Genetic Disorder Affects Brain and Craniofacial Skeleton

New Genetic Disorder Affects Brain and Craniofacial Skeleton

New genetic disorder is characterized by developmental delays and malformations of the brain, heart and facial features. Named linkage-specific-deubiquitylation-deficiency-induced embryonic defects syndrome (LINKED), the disorder is caused by a mutated version of the OTUD5 gene, that affects the key molecular steps in embryo development.
The findings indicate that the newly identified pathway may be essential for human development and may also underlie other disorders that are present at birth. The information will help scientists better understand such diseases both common and rare and improve patient care. The results were reported in ....
