Oakland A's news: San Francisco Giants sign Scott Kazmir to minor league contract

Good morning, Athletics Nation!
Jed Lowrie isn’t the only former Oakland A’s All-Star looking to make a comeback in 2021. Another familiar name is back in the Bay Area, though on the other side of it.
The San Francisco Giants signed pitcher
Scott Kazmir to a minor league contract, reports Buster Olney of ESPN. If he makes the MLB squad then he’ll earn $600K, just over league-minimum, and there is no opt-out date by which the Giants must bring him up, adds Susan Slusser of the S.F. Chronicle.
The lefty last pitched in the majors in 2016, for the Dodgers, and he already made one famous comeback in his career. In 2012, the longtime star fell out of affiliated ball entirely and went to the independent Atlantic League, but he worked his way back to the majors with the Indians and then signed with the A’s in 2014. He made the All-Star team that year with Oakland, the third selection of his career, and pitched even better the next summer before being traded away ....

NC Dinos Re-Sign Aaron Altherr, Drew Rucinski
8:49am CDT
The NC Dinos of the Korea Baseball Organization kicked off the New Year by announcing that they’ve re-signed outfielder
Drew Rucinski to new one-year contracts for the 2021 season. Dan Kurtz of MyKBO.net tweets that Altherr’s deal comes with a $1.3MM guarantee and another $100K available via incentives, while Rucinski will be paid $1.6MM with up to $200K of incentives. Altherr is represented by All Bases Covered. Rucinski is represented by Paragon Sports.
Altherr, 30 next month, had some success with the Phillies in 2015 and 2017 but never fully established himself as a big league regular. By 2019, he was designated for assignment multiple times and split the season between three clubs, going just 5-for-61 at the MLB level. ....

Good morning, Athletics Nation!
The Oakland A’s appear to be keeping their front office intact for 2021, but not every MLB team is able to say the same thing this winter. Five clubs have hired new general managers since November, with the most recent coming Tuesday when the Philadelphia Phillies named Sam Fuld as their GM.
Fuld played eight seasons in the majors as an outfielder for four teams, including two stints in Oakland spanning much of 2014 and all of 2015. Super Sam became a national fan favorite as a player, and has been a candidate for the manager position in various teams’ dugouts, including the Red Sox this winter. ....

Former Oakland A's: Daniel Mengden considering Korea; Raul Alcantara to Japan; Dillon Overton signs in Taiwan

The Oakland A’s aren’t in a hurry to make any moves this winter, but a few of their former pitchers have found new homes.
First up is
Daniel Mengden, who played for the A’s in 2020 but was cut from the roster at the end of the year and became a free agent. The right-hander is in talks with the KIA Tigers of the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO), and while a deal isn’t official yet, it was described as “close” on Monday.
If Mengden were to sign with the Tigers, he’d be reunited with manager Matt Williams, who was an A’s coach in 2018-19. He’d also join forces with former A’s pitcher/teammate ....
