In April of 2019, thousands of protesters descended upon London. They blocked bridges, dragged a pink boat into one of the city s central squares, and, at one point, some stripped nearly naked in the House of Commons. Their goal? Get the United Kingdom to become the first country in the world to declare a climate emergency.

Yves here. This is the sort of post I very much like, since it made me smarter about a government procedure that Trump used actively, the 1996 Congressional Review Act. What surprised me was that Trump was the first President to use it aggressively, and that the Act is vague enough on key points as to be seen as legally grey. Yet Trump’s moves were never challenged in court! So much for Team Dem’s brand commitment to fighting.

Sen. Jeff Merkley is calling on President-elect Joe Biden to employ bold executive action to address climate change, urging unilateral changes to transportation and spending on alternative energy.
The climate crisis is an emergency, and President-elect Joe Biden needs to treat it that way, Merkley, D-Ore., said in a Washington Post op-ed Monday. That means using every tool available to him, including declaring a national climate emergency and using emergency powers to take unilateral executive action.
He added that the country can t wait for legislative action, even from a Democratic Senate. Instead, he said Biden should leverage the Defense Production Act and the National Emergencies Act to take sweeping action. ....
