HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) All seven of Connecticut’s electors cast their ballots Monday for Democratic President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris in an unusual, socially distanced ceremony at the state Capitol that some electors called an honor of a lifetime, especially during these politically turbulent times.
“I am positively thrilled. I have to tell you that this is the most exciting day of my life,” said John Kalamarides, a former chairman of the Wilton Democratic Town Committee. He added it was “disturbing” to see Republican President Donald Trump and his supporters question the validity of the election. ....

As the winner the popular vote in Connecticut, the state’s seven electors cast ballots for Joe Biden for president and Kamala Harris for vice president.
“The vote of the Electoral College marks the ceremonial end of the 2020 election and is a part of the peaceful transfer of power that is the hallmark of our American democracy,” said Secretary Denise Merrill. “In the face of a once-in-a-lifetime global pandemic, everyone in Connecticut, from state government to local election officials to the ten thousand volunteers who stepped up to be democracy heroes, was able to work together and hold an election where every eligible voter was able to register and cast their ballot, without putting their health at risk. The registrars of voters, town clerks, moderators, poll workers, and all the volunteers in each town deserve our gratitude for all their hard work over the last nine months. Connecticut's 7 Electoral Votes Go To Biden and Harris

“The Electoral College is a quark of American democracy, but a pivotal one,” Secretary of the State Denise Merrill said.
Merrill said each state chooses its own process for choosing electors. In Connecticut these positions are filled at party conventions.
“Even though original concept of the Electoral College is controversial and no longer functioning in the way it was originally intended it has become symbolic of closure for a presidential election,” Merrill said.
In Connecticut electors are bound by state law to cast a ballot for the candidate certified in the election.
“Nationally 270 electoral votes must be secured in order to win the presidency and in nearly all the states including Connecticut by state statute, the presidential candidate who wins the state gets all of the state party’s electors,” Merrill said. ....

Each presidential election year, seven people are selected to represent Connecticut in the Electoral College.
They are tasked with one job: Cast a ballot for the candidates for president and vice president who won their state’s popular vote.
Since Joe Biden and Kamala Harris won the popular vote in Connecticut, Democratic electors were chosen to certify the state’s results. Biden received more than 59 percent of the vote in Connecticut, defeating President Donald J. Trump with 1,080,680 votes to 715,291.
