But tucked in as the very last provision in the latest state budget may be a reprieve for those now contesting those cuts, offering some hope although maybe fleeting that their state aid could be restored. The 279-page budget approved by the Legislature and signed by Murphy last month includes a fine-print provision on its final page that says the state will indeed provide additional funds if it was found to be falling short of certain requirements under the massive federal American Rescue Plan. ....
Jersey City Board of Education hosts special meeting to discuss upcoming budget By Daniel Ulloa/Hudson County View The budget hearing comes just over a week after the state cut the Jersey City Public School funding by $71 million, though some of that will be offset by $48.3 million in federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund. “Underfunding has established inequities in our school, impacted the progress and safety of our kids, impacted our ability to handle this pandemic, and hindered our ability to reopen our schools,” said Nancy Pokler who identified as a member of Jersey City Together. “I’m hoping that at this time this school funding hot potato game will finally be called out and that our leaders of our Board of Education will put all political aspirations and pressures aside in order to establish ownership over the future of our schools. Our local funding responsibility shouldn’t be overlooked.” ....

Jersey City Council approves zoning measure to move Morris Canal Manor project forward By Daniel Ulloa/Hudson County View At Monday’s caucus meeting, Lavarro revealed Jersey City received $1 million from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to reimburse the purchase of the property, which was supposed to be incorporated into Berry Lane Park. Acting Business Administrator John Metro said the dollars remain unspent, adding that the city can work with the DEP to find a comparable project where the money can be used. Jersey City Redevelopment Agency (JCRA) Executive Director Diana Jeffrey said the site, known as Steel Technologies, was always privately owned. ....
