HOMELESS SHELTER. THIS IS CRITICAL TO WHAT WE DO. IT’S TOUGH TO HAVE A PLACE TO CALL HOME WITHOUT FRIENDS FAMILY PROMISE IN LAWRENCE HOUSING MORE THAN 375 HOMELESS FAMILIES IN 2020 ALONE. THEY CAN STAY HERE FOR 60 DAYS AND THEN THEY GET TO MOVE ON INTO THEIR PERMANENT HOUSING THE AVERAGE STAGE JUST 55 DAYS AND NEARLY 85% OF THE FOLKS THAT MOVE IN HERE TEMPORARILY FIND PERMIT HOUSING. IT’S A BEAUTIFUL ARRANGEMENT AND THANKS TO THESE VOLUNTEERS. IT IS A BEAUTIFUL ARRANGEMENT IKEA DONATING MORE THAN 25 THOUSAND DOLLARS WERE THE FURNITURE COMPLETELY REDOING 4 OF THE HOME. For those struggling to afford housing or already experiencing homelessness, being approved for housing assistance can seem like a solution is finally at hand. The reality is that even with that money guaranteed, it can be months before recipients of housing assistance are able to find a landlord or property management company willing to rent to them.
Dana Ortiz, executive director of the housing support program Lawrence Family Promise and member of the city’s Affordable Housing Advisory Board, said that a family who qualifies for a housing voucher is initially given 90 days to find a landlord, and sometimes that isn’t enough. Ortiz said it’s not uncommon for a family to need one or even two 90-day extensions, or six to nine months total, to find a landlord who will accept the vouchers. ....

Thanks to federal aid, more than 1,000 Douglas County residents received housing support this year as the coronavirus pandemic caused many to lose income.
But with a new year coming and little new funding currently available, those residents may soon see that support disappear.
Leaders of organizations that oversee the Housing Stabilization Collaborative, a local housing and rent support program, said they were proud of how well the program used its more than $1 million allotment from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, also known as CARES.
However, the funds from that package had to be spent before the end of the year. That means those funds cannot be used to help in 2021, and the new year will pose new problems for those receiving support if another similar aid package is not provided. ....
