Jesus Tapia Jr., 59, of Ottawa, pleaded no contest to a modified rape charge Tuesday morning, and Judge Keith Schierloh found him guilty of the first-degree felony. Tapia will be sentenced at 11 a.m. Aug. 12, a week prior to the planned start of a jury trial. ....

Todd Schroeder, a criminal defense attorney at Belzer, Schroeder & Lough in La Crosse, outlined the process, one that, in all situations, would take some time. Gathering initial information and evidence may take weeks, while getting court order reports would take months. “It can take literally years before there’s actually a jury trial. I’d say having a jury trial within a year on a homicide case is very rare, more like one to three years is probably more common,” Schroeder said. ....
