The 14-year-old competed in the Bay of Islands event on Saturday marking the achievement. Sam was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome, a rare kidney disorder, at a young age and spent a lot of time in Starship Hospital growing up. ....

Michael Daniel Ryan 89, of Mitchell, passed away on Nov. 22, 2020. Born on Dec. 18, 1931 in Sioux Falls, he attended public schools there and was a representative to South Dakota Boys State in the summer of 1948 where he received the outstanding citizen award and then was sent to the Boys Forum of National Government in Washington D.C. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and went to Japan and Germany, receiving an honorable discharge in 1955 when he enrolled at Augustana College in Sioux Falls. After earning undergraduate degrees with highest honors at Augustana (B.A. in German and History, 1957) and at Drew University’s Theological School in Madison, N.J. (Bachelor of Divinity, 1962) he continued his doctoral study at Drew, joining the faculty in 1969 as Associate Professor of Theology and retiring as Professor of Historical Theology in 1997 when he relocated to Mitchell with his son Todd Ryan, who predeceased him in 2015.
