There s good news forÂ the worldâs most endangered turtle, because the capture of a female in Vietnam means that at least one male and one female Swinhoeâs softshell turtle are now known to exist.
The female (Rafetus swinhoei) was captured on 22 October in Dong Mo Lake in Hanoi, and the male lives at Suzhou Zoo in China. Authorities believe there is at least one more turtle - also known as the Yangtze giant softshell turtle and Hoan Kiem turtle - in the lake and another in nearby Xuan Khanh Lake. They hope to capture and determine the sex of the other turtles this coming spring, and their aim is that one male and female are given a chance to breed to ensure the species can return from the brink of extinction. ....

Ta Van Son, director of the city Fisheries Department, said a group of its researchers at Dong Mo Lake spotted the turtle on October 22.
Scientists weighed, measured and took samples for genetic testing and released the animal back in the lake.
Experts from the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and Vietnam National University Hanoi analyzed its DNA and concluded it belongs to the species ....
