This strange year s strange holiday season might feel a little less strange with some familiar entertainment as part of it. While the closure of Salt Lake County arts venues forced the cancellation of Ballet West s beloved annual production of
The Nutcracker, those who have made it a tradition for all or part of its 65-year history can still get a dose thanks to a first-ever broadcast presentation.
In partnership with KSL-TV, Ballet West will present
The Nutcracker commercial-free on three nights Dec. 24, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 beginning at 5:30 p.m. MT, and subsequently available to stream on KSL s free app. Those who grew up with the story in any of its many forms know and love E.T.A. Hoffman s story of a young girl who befriends a nutcracker that comes to life on Christmas Eve to battle the Mouse King. The familiar, beautiful music of Tchaikovsky is set to the legendary choreography of Ballet West co-founder William Christensen.

Mercer County Community College’s youth program, Camp College, is accepting students for Winter Session and Spring 2021.
Virtual classes for students ages 6-14 focus on science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) with staggered start dates from December through May. Each course is taught live through Zoom and provides a project-based learning experience that combines peer learning with creativity.
Offerings range from science and planetary science study, to writing and book publishing, to coding, animation techniques and virtual reality design. A new e-Sports games-play skill builder was added this session. Two new courses will be introduced this session, including Young Authors where students write and publish books, and YouTube FX Masters where students create Hollywood-style special effects and graphics.

The Houston Symphony’s annual Very Merry Pops concert excels at this, often unlocking hidden dimensions of or applying a fresh sheen to holiday fare many people have, with good reason, written off as stale.
Conducted for the 18th time by former principal Pops conductor Michael Krajewski, this past weekend’s concert which repeats Dec. 18-20 was altogether more subdued and reflective than in years past, perfectly in keeping with the tenor of the times. Though it did have a spot or two of fun.
