The Houston Symphony’s annual Very Merry Pops concert excels at this, often unlocking hidden dimensions of or applying a fresh sheen to holiday fare many people have, with good reason, written off as stale.
Conducted for the 18th time by former principal Pops conductor Michael Krajewski, this past weekend’s concert which repeats Dec. 18-20 was altogether more subdued and reflective than in years past, perfectly in keeping with the tenor of the times. Though it did have a spot or two of fun.
