Randolph public schools ditch Columbus for Indigenous Peoples Day

Randolph public schools ditch Columbus for Indigenous Peoples Day
RANDOLPH Another North Jersey school district has opted to swap Christopher Columbus Day for Indigenous Peoples Day on its calendar.
Randolph Township Public Schools will amend its district calendar, following the unanimous vote during a Board of Education virtual meeting on Thursday.
A member of the board s Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee made the immediate recommendation to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day, proposed about an hour and 40 minutes into the meeting, saying it was meant to “strengthen Randolph’s commitment to diversity and inclusion and show our community that we embrace the histories of all people.” ....

Why canceling snow days in NYC is a mistake

Don t you dare take away our snow days, New York City. School kids need the magic of snow days.
Students have a lot of catching up to do, but an unscheduled day off can teach adaptability, meteorology and team work  and be pretty magical, too.
USA TODAY
Editor s note: On Tuesday, New York City s Department of Education announced it will eliminate snow days in favor of remote learning for the 2021-22 school year. This column was originally published last December.
When the biggest nor’easter in years made its way up the East Coast last winter, one thing was conspicuously absent from the local news reports: the typical roster of school closings and delays. ....

Opinion: Children must return to in-person learning

Opinion: Children must return to in-person learning
Lawrence Township Public Schools is not one of those districts.
Although they’ve taken steps in the right direction, Superintendent Ross Kasun and the Board of Education stand firm in their belief that a return to full-time, in-person learning is not necessary, or possible, for the current school year. I disagree as do many Lawrence parents.
Dr. Kasun repeatedly tells parents it does not matter that Princeton and Robbinsville found ways to return their students this year because “Lawrence is different.” Yet, he hasn’t answered our question: Why is Lawrence so different that it can’t take the same actions as other districts? ....
