A cultural center in South Dallas has a new residency program for artists. Called the
Juanita J. Craft House Artist Residency Initiative, it s an immersive, interactive program for artists of all disciplines to connect with South Dallas neighborhoods.
The program is at the South Dallas Cultural Center, under the wing of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture department. It will begin accepting applications in April.
The residency will offer non-living studio space and connect artists to residents, organizations, and institutions to develop a body of work centering on community activism. ....

Dallas plans to sweep Camp Rhonda, a symbol of houseless organizing

The city of Dallas threatened a local unhoused encampment with displacement and destruction of personal property on Wednesday, January 27th. This encampment, near the Austin Street Shelter, is named Camp Rhonda after a beloved community member who tragically passed.
The camp has grown because of the involvement and leadership of several houseless individuals, including Rhonda, in coordination with groups like Diaspora United, Dallas Stops Evictions and several other organizations. This development began during the summer of 2020 uprisings against racism, when participants in the struggle recognized the necessity of sustained organizing.
Over the last few months, Camp Rhonda has become a vital distribution point for resources and donations to dozens of people in desperate need of support. The destruction of the camp would mean the loss of a critically needed central location where food, clothing, laundry and health screenings are all available. ....

Texas is expected to receive about $1.9 billion in federal rental assistance funding approved by Congress in December.
With rental assistance on the way, communities are scrambling to get ready to actually hand out the money to people who need it.
Two days after Christmas, President Donald Trump signed legislation that would send $25 billion-worth of assistance to struggling renters across America. It was part of that big coronavirus relief package passed by Congress.
Jessica Galleshaw, director of Dallas’ Office of Community Care, said it feels like she’s building a plane in mid-air. Her office will deploy $40 million of incoming federal rental assistance. ....
