Footfall in shops across Britain jumped 87.8% last week compared to the one before as non-essential stores in England reopened after the Covid lockdown, as retail experts hailed an outstanding first week for the sector. 
High streets saw a 93.2% increase in footfall, while shopping centres performed even better with a 126.6% gain. 
Retail parks were busy throughout lockdown due to a high concentration of essential stores but still marked a 35.3% uplift. This means that footfall at retail parks is just 2% below the 2019 pre-pandemic figure. 
Offering easy access by car, free parking and more open space, consumers feel safe and know they can enjoy their shopping experience, Helen Dickinson, head of the British Retail Consortium, told the FT to explain the appeal of retail parks.   ....

Footfall soared 87.8% week on week in the week commencing 12 April, new data shows.
Footfall increased by 126% week on week in shopping centres, and 93.2% across high streets, according to Springboard data. Footfall in retail parks increased by 35.3% in the same week non-essential retail in England and Wales reopened.
Footfall across all UK destinations was up by 330.1% year on year, owing to this comparison falling in the middle of the first lockdown in April 2020. It decreased by 25.4% when compared with the same period in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic.
Opening day delivered the greatest increase in footfall of any day last week. In the 24-hour period, footfall rose 151.8%. ....

LONDON (Reuters) - The number of people heading to shops across Britain jumped 87.8% last week as non-essential stores reopened after three months of COVID-19 lockdown, researcher Springboard said on Monday.
The surge in the week to April 17 from the previous seven days was roughly double Springboard s forecast, the company s insights director, Diane Wehrle, said.
Shopper numbers rose 93.2% on high streets, 126.6% in shopping centres and 35.3% in retail parks, the data showed.
These results provide concrete evidence of the desire of shoppers to return to bricks and mortar stores, Wehrle said. ....

The number of people visiting shops increased by almost 200% last week in England as non-essential retailers were allowed to open their doors to consumers for the first time since early January as Covid restrictions were relaxed.
Industry figures from the British Retail Consortium and separate data from Springboard, a research provider, revealed a sharp rise in footfall on high streets and at retail parks and shopping centres across the country.
Taken from sensors at the doors of thousands of retail stores, footfall jumped by 195.5% in England on the six days to Saturday 17 April compared with the week before. The biggest gains were recorded in cities such as Portsmouth, where footfall was up more than 1,00%, and Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool and Birmingham – all up more tha ....
