Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise
Bartlesville Education Promise is Oklahoma s top education nonprofit organization, recognized for its exceptional work in increasing the number of Bartlesville students who graduate from high school.
The group was one of 21 Oklahoma organizations selected from around 19,000 nonprofits statewide as a finalist for the prestigious Oklahoma Nonprofit Excellence (ONE) Awards.
BEP received the top honor in the education category during an April 24 ceremony at Tulsa s Southern Hills Country Club. It was awarded a glass-inscribed vase, a medallion and $7,500.
“It is gratifying to be recognized for our organization’s desire to help more students graduate, said Vanessa Drummond, the group s board vice chair as she accepted the award. Our community has been very responsive to this important mission.”
In a unanimous 5-0 decision at its January 19 meeting, the Emeryville City Council approved the final step necessary to rename a street in front of Emery High School after a late instructor who had been fired for receiving gender confirmation surgery.
In May 2020, the council voted unanimously to name the block of 47th Street between San Pablo Avenue and Doyle Street after Steve Dain, a trans man who taught gym at Emery High between 1966 and 1976.
As the Bay Area Reporter previously reported, the Emeryville Tattler published a scathing post last November noting that while the street name change had been approved last May, the new signs were not yet up.

Cezar was one who suffered in silence throughout his life, he had pain and breathing problems almost every day. He never shrugged from responsibility or lending a helping hand. He used his humor and easy-going nature to push away the negativity of the world or those who were gloomy. He loved to laugh and seldom found a reason to frown. He was a writer, a thinker, a tinkerer, a plumber, mover, entrepreneur, cleaner, Santa, student, advocate for the “underdog”, boxer, artist, shopper and anything he needed to be to “fix” things or make something better for whomever needed help.
