Bills filed in NC General Assembly for veterans and military families

Since the North Carolina General Assembly started its session Jan. 13, several bills have been filed that could impact local veterans, service members and military families if enacted into law.   On Wednesday, legislators unanimously approved House Bill 138, which recognizes April 24 as Wounded Heroes Day in North Carolina.   It is in honor of retired Sgt. Michael Verardo who was catastrophically wounded in Afghanistan while serving with the 82nd Airborne Division in 2010.   Here’s a look at some other bills that are pending, before the General Assembly is expected to adjourn July 2.  • Senate Bill 471 seeks to increase veteran access to healthcare in North Carolina by expanding eligibility for the Medicaid program.
