Cape Fear Valley Blood Donation Center seeking donations

Cape Fear Valley s Blood Donation Center needs your help.
The nonprofit, which serves Cumberland, Harnett, Hoke and Bladen counties, has been running on a blood shortage for months, mobile recruitment coordinator Dianne Carter said in an email Friday. It s seeking blood donors, as well as places to host blood drives, to help address what Carter said is a nationwide shortage.
Carter said Cape Fear is currently running on about a 1 to 2 day supply and that a single visit from a trauma patient can deplete it. She said that they re getting blood from around 1% of the population they serve. Calls to the national blood exchange to get more blood have been unsuccessful. Even there, there s not any available to send, Carter said. ....

An 86-year-old mother in the extremely vulnerable category has shared her stressful experience in her efforts to be vaccinated.
The Farndon resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, asked her daughter, Erika Szyszczak, to handle her covid-19 vaccination booking as she is hard of hearing.
Erika, who lives in Brighton, said it was a struggle to get the flu vaccine, which was needed before her covid vaccine.

âIt began in mid-December 2020 when my mother had still not had her flu vaccine, and we realised she needed it urgently to obtain the covid-19 vaccine, which we thought would roll out at the end of December 2020 for her,â said Erika. ....

Frontline workers at some Alberta non-profits will get the $1,200 benefit for serving in critical roles throughout the pandemic after the government appeared to take a U-turn Thursday.
