Future uncertain for pristine Summerland hilltop

SUMMERLAND, Calif. - The Carpinteria Unified School District (CUSD) is preparing to embark on a new school for the community of Summerland.
In order for that to happen, an undeveloped hilltop parcel above town, owned by the District, must sell to the highest bidder. One woman with roots in the ground, is rallying the community for support. 
NewsChannel 3 met up with Leslie Person Ryan on the land she s leased from CUSD for the past year.

Wildflowers and mustard weed dot the hillside property off Whitney Avenue. A closer look reveals lettuce, corn, and other vegetables and fruit sprouting up on the dry farm she planted above a greenbelt. The roots of her business, Sweet Wheel Farm & Flowers, are expanding.  ....

Plans to Rebuild Summerland Elementary School Get Boost with Approval of Temporary-Use Permit

The approximately $6.2 million project is funded by Measure U, the $90 million general obligation bond passed by voters in the district in 2014, as well as other facilities funds,  according to the Measure U website.
When the project is underway, Summerland Elementary students and staff will occupy four portable classrooms located on the southeastern side of the Main School campus and adjacent to the on-site parking lot.
Plans call for the existing on-site parking lot to be temporarily closed and repurposed as an outdoor play area for the students.
Students will be bused to and from the campus daily from Summerland Elementary to minimize traffic impacts in the surrounding neighborhood, and Summerland Elementary staff will have designated parking spots at Carpinteria Middle School on Palm Avenue.  ....
