Composer Paul Dean’s newest work, to be premiered next month by the Australia World Orchestra, is titled simply
Symphony.
“You sound like a wanker if you say ‘Symphony Number One’,” says Dean. “It immediately tells the world that you are going to write a second.”
So is he?
“I’d like to, but I don’t know if I am.”
It’s a disarmingly self-deprecating but evidently characteristic response from Dean, who is one of Australia’s leading clarinettists and artistic directors as well as being a prolific composer with an impressive list of chamber works, concertos and even an opera to his name. ....

WITH some of the best and most respected musicians in the world on the stage in front of you, expectations are high. The “Australian cringe” might put those expectations on an evenhigher plane. Whatever the expectations for this concert, they were exceeded. Decisively.

Artsday / Luke's art confronts power and extremism


Luke Cornish looks at power and spin – Hamlet-style.
“DON’T Shoot the Messenger” is a confronting exhibition from former Canberra street artist Luke Cornish (ELK) which features 54 hand cut stencil works. By holding a mirror up to society through his art (that’s from “Hamlet”), Cornish hopes to inspire people to think critically about power, spin and extremism. The exhibition will open at the aMBUSH Gallery, Kambri, ANU, from 6-8pm, Friday, March 12. It will then runs 10am-6pm weekdays and 12pm-5pm on weekends until April 11. Registration essential here. 
“THIS is us: A musical reflection of Australia” will be performed by by classical guitarists Slava and Leonard Grigoryan to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the opening of the National Museum of Australia. Johannes Fritzsch, one of Australia’s leading international conductors, has been named Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s new Principal Conductor and Artistic Adviser; it is a very welcome return for the world-class Maestro.
“The appointment of Maestro Fritzsch as QSO’s new Principal Conductor and Artistic Adviser extends until 2023, and we are thrilled and honoured that he has agreed to return to the fold to provide the orchestra with outstanding and unequalled artistic leadership,” said QSO Chair Mr Chris Freeman.
“Maestro Fritzsch remains integral to the Queensland Symphony Orchestra,” he said. “He is one of the great musical leaders, a conductor we can credit with building the QSO into the world class orchestra it is today, one that is spoken of in concert halls everywhere for its musicality and integrity.
