When we think of child stars now, we imagine children aged 9 or 10 or even in their early teens. We think of Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone, Haley Joel Osment in The Sixth Sense or even Jayden Smith starring opposite his father, Will, in After Earth. But in the silent era, and the early years of talking pictures, child stars were often barely more than babies, as reflected by their names.
There was Baby Marie, who made her most famous film, Little Mary Sunshine, at age five. There was Baby LeRoy, who was given a studio contract at 16 months and appeared opposite W.C. Fields in the classic comedy It s A Gift. And there was Baby Peggy, who in 1920 was discovered aged 19 months and in 1924 earned a million dollars for starring in Captain January.
While the COVID-19 pandemic ushered in a new era of screen time Zoom teleconferencing, more Netflix than anyone thought possible and FaceTime as a way to socialize it also seems to have brought out a lot of authors and other creatives in our own backyard.
Here’s a look at the local books, murals and more of the past year, as well as the inventive ways that arts institutions have continued to provide programming during the pandemic.

Polar Bear Plunge: An estimated 400 people participate in the Polar Bear Plunge on New Year’s Day at La Jolla Shores. Sponsored by the La Jolla Cove Swim Club, the plunge is a 30-year-old local tradition in which La Jollans and others rush into the cold ocean for play or swim.

Buck Henry
Buck Henry passed away on January 8th at the age of 89 due to a heart attack. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Henry joined The Premise, an improv comedy group that performed in the West Village in Manhattan. From there, Henry went on to write for Steve Allen and Garry Moore, and he was even the face of an elaborate hoax created by comedian Alan Abel that spanned close to three years. Henry made many public appearances as G. Clifford Prout, the president of the Society for Indecency
