Berkeley's fire chief is leaving to take top fire spot in Piedmont.

David Brannigan, who has served as Berkeley’s fire chief for the last three years, is stepping down to take over as fire chief for the city of Piedmont. Abraham Roman, currently Berkeley’s deputy fire chief, will assume the position of interim head of the department.
Brannigan said his new role will allow him to spend more time with his family as the demands of the job will be less. Piedmont’s single fire station is about a mile from Brannigan’s Oakland home and serves a much smaller area than Berkeley one square mile large compared to Berkeley’s 11 square miles. Moreover, Piedmont’s population is one-tenth the size of Berkeley’s, he said. ....

Usually, around this time of year, we’re feeling pretty good. We’re buzzing with a sense of joy and relaxation, spending time with family and friends, gathering and eating meals together and looking back on the fun times we had over the last 12 months. After almost a full year of living with COVID-19, those halcyon holiday times seem so distant from our current reality. But while we didn’t get many opportunities to eat at restaurants or meet up for meals with friends, we still did have some good times and ate plenty of good food in 2020. ....
