Scottish Panoramas: a memorial to the man who formed the SAS


David Stirling Memorial
TRAVEL north from Stirling on the motorway and at the roundabout before Dunblane take the first left onto the B824. The road dips and rises and then the landscape opens up as the Trossachs fill your vision. That’s where you will find the memorial to David Stirling.
Erected in 2002 and designed by Angela Conner, it is a tribute to a man who was born at Keir House in the family estate nearby, Lieutenant Colonel Sir Archibald David Stirling, DSO, OBE, and to the elite military unit he set up in 1941, the Special Air Service. Memorial plaques to those members of the SAS who have lost their lives in service of their country are also part of the memorial. ....

From the Americas to the roof of country-house follies, Matthew Dennison traces the journey of the pineapple, one of Georgian Britain’s most coveted fruits.
In the summer of 1767, it was a source of some surprise to the writer of the Manchester Mercury that Edward Higgins, committed to Carmarthen Castle for burglary, hadn’t included among booty stolen from the home of Mrs Biven of Laugherne any pineapples.
Having made himself comfortable in Mrs Biven’s kitchen to the extent of spreading a cloth on the table and lighting two candles in silver candlesticks before eating a chicken Higgins ‘got over a Wall into the Garden, and went into the Hot-house, where were many Pine-Apples fit to take’. Higgins, however, ‘took only four Cucumbers’. ....
