Kimball student wins state Resource Conservation Speech Contest

The 60
th annual Resource Conservation Speech Contest State Finals were held at the State Capitol in Pierre on Saturday, April 24, 2021.
The contest theme was “What Have You Done for Conservation Lately?”
Winning first place and a $1,100 scholarship was Isabelle Mairose. Isabelle was sponsored by Brule-Buffalo Conservation District and is a homeschooled sophomore. She is the daughter of Mary and Steve Mairose of Kimball.
Winning second place and a $750 scholarship was Seth Schoon. Seth was sponsored by Mellette Conservation District and is a sophomore at Sunshine Bible Academy. He is the son of Jennifer and Lealand Schoon of White River.
Winning third place and a $450 scholarship was Remington Miklos. Remington was sponsored by Custer Conservation District and is a sophomore at Custer High School. He is the son of Amy and Tom Miklos of Custer. ....

NEW LONDON Kevin Reidy from Firelands Electric Cooperative recently received the Credentialed Cooperative Director certificate from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), according to a news release from Firelands Electric.
An ever-changing business environment has imposed new demands on electric cooperative trustees, requiring increased knowledge of changes in the electric utility business, new governance skills and a solid knowledge of the cooperative principles and business model, said the release, which added that electric co-ops in Ohio have a commitment to work through NRECA to sharpen this body of knowledge for the benefit of their electric cooperative consumer-owners. ....

Peggy Lee, a member of the Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative Board of Directors, recently earned and was awarded the Board Leadership Certificate (BLC) from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA).

Economic developer pens article praising Frankfort, new leadership in European trade magazine

A Kentucky economic development specialist and Frankfort residentÂ published an article in a European trade magazine showcasing new initiatives from Frankfort and Franklin County government officials.
Brad Thomas works on economic development projects for Kentuckyâs Touchstone Energy Cooperatives, an electricity cooperative that covers 87 of the stateâs 120 counties. His article on Frankfort and Franklin County was published in the magazine Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) International, which is aimed at European business leaders.
FDI Internationalâs tagline is âBridging the gap between economic development and site selection.â
Formerly chief of staff at the Finance and Administration Cabinet, Thomas said he has written quarterly for FDI International since early 2020. ....
