Mark the time and date. At 9 a.m. EDT today, British billionaire Richard Branson plans to blast off in his Virgin Galactic spaceship on a course for the edge of Earth’s atmosphere. It marks a brave new world for commercial space tourism, ranking among orbital milestones going back to 1957, when the Soviet Union launched its Sputnik 1 satellite to begin the space age.
Nine days from now, on July 20, the world’s richest man, Jeff Bezos, is set to take off too, on a spacecraft produced by his company Blue Origin. Until now, only the Russian government space agency Roscosmos had taken civilians on paid excursions. But with their closely-timed trips, Branson and Bezos are telling the world they’re ready to bet their lives on the success and safety of their own commercial expeditions. And they’re not alone. Today’s Sun ....

A brief history: what we know so far about fast radio bursts across the universe

But we still have much to learn, such as what causes them.
We know the intense bursts originate in galaxies billions of light years away. We have also used these bursts (called FRBs) to find missing matter that couldn’t be found otherwise.
With teams of astronomers around the world racing to understand their enigma, how did we get to where we are now?
The first burst
The first FRB was discovered in 2007 by a team led by British-American astronomer Duncan Lorimer using Murriyang, the traditional Indigenous name for the iconic Parkes radio telescope (image, top).
The team found an incredibly bright pulse so bright that many astronomers did not believe it to be real. But there was yet more intrigue. ....

NANOGrav finds possible 'first hints' of low-frequency gravitational wave background

Credit: West Virginia University
In data gathered and analyzed over 13 years, the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) Physics Frontiers Center (PFC) has found an intriguing low-frequency signal that may be attributable to gravitational waves.
NANOGrav researchers - including a number from West Virginia University s (WVU s) Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Center for Gravitational Waves and Cosmology - measure the times of arrival of radio pulses from exotic stars called pulsars with large radio telescopes, including the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Pulsars are small, dense stars that rapidly rotate, emitting beamed radio waves, much like a lighthouse. The results from this most recent dataset show perturbations in the arrival times from these pulsars that may indicate the effects of gravitational waves, as reported recently in ....
