Planting trees to get to net zero would need land five times the size of India

Planting trees to get to net zero would need land five times the size of India
Reforestation may not be enough for corporations to achieve carbon offsetting goals as there is not enough land, according to study
3 August 2021 • 6:00am
Meeting global net zero carbon commitments could require tree planting on land equivalent to five times the size of India, a new report has said.
More than 120 countries and hundreds more corporations have made commitments to be net zero by the middle of this century, which entails offsetting unavoidable emissions with new technologies or nature-based methods that suck up carbon.
However, relying on tree planting to meet those goals was “mathematically impossible” because there was not enough land, a new report from Oxfam said. ....

The first Americans: How and when were the Americas populated?

The first Americans: How and when were the Americas populated?
by Mary Caperton Morton
Thursday, December 15, 2016
Archaeologists used to have a tidy story to explain the earliest peopling of the Americas: During the last ice age, when sea levels were much lower, a band of intrepid travelers walked from East Asia, over the Bering land bridge, and into Alaska. From there, they followed an ice-free corridor east of the Canadian Rockies south onto the megafauna-rich plains, eventually spreading throughout North and South America by 11,000 years ago and leaving a trail of finely shaped “Clovis” spear points in their wake.
But the story is not so simple. The once-dominant “Clovis First” Hypothesis has been overturned in recent years by discoveries of an array of pre-Clovis tools and campsites throughout North and South America that date to as early as 16,000 years ago. But how is it that people colonized the Americas so much earlier than once thought? F ....

Leading academics and climate experts urge European legislators to adopt separate targets for carbon removals, and ensure GHG reductions and carbon removals each progress in a manner commensurate with the climate crisis

This is a watershed moment for the EU Climate Law. The current efforts to mitigate climate change are expected to fall short of the necessary reductions for 2030 due to the premature insertion of a ‘net’ target for 2030. Amongst the academics signing the letter, founding thinkers of the ‘net-zero’ concept who have expressed their wariness of a ‘net’ target that mixed emission reductions and removals.  ....

Countries pledge 'net-zero' emissions by a certain year, what's the big fuss about it?- Technology News, Firstpost

Countries pledge net-zero emissions by a certain year, what s the big fuss about it?
Experts say net zero plans should clearly separate targets for slashing greenhouse gas emissions from future carbon removal schemes.
Dec 10, 2020 12:03:02 IST
The worldwide effort to prevent Earth from becoming an unlivable hothouse is in the grips of net-zero fever. More than 110 countries have committed to becoming carbon neutral by mid-century, including major greenhouse gas emitters such as Britain, Japan and South Korea, according to the United Nations. The European Union has taken the vow, as has incoming US President Joe Biden. China which generates a quarter of all carbon pollution set 2060 as the year when any remaining emissions from energy, agriculture or industry must be offset by tree farms or experimental technologies that suck CO2 from the air. ....
